In 2019, around a third of US workers were considering a change of employer or career. By 2022, it was more than half.

Feeling like we’re in a role that works for us, rather than the other way around, is a basic human need.

Judging by the statistics, it’s a need that is not being met for millions upon millions of people.

This is important. Working somewhere we feel valued means we feel more engaged and more passionate about our work. We’re more creative and have lower levels of chronic stress at work, and better mental health at home.

This is particularly true for specialists, people with expert level knowledge in a particular area. You’ve spent years building your skills: it’s incredibly deflating if those skills are not appropriately recognised.

How does PrtnerUp help you?
For many people, joining the gig economy is not the solution. Let’s be honest – a string of short-term, insecure work is not for everyone. A lot of us want something with more commitment and longevity.

Whatever it looks like, a lot of experts just like you are interested in a greater sense of fulfillment than they are getting in their current roles.

Meanwhile, a lot of business owners are in need of people just like you, with specialised expertise to help their business grow and succeed.

PrtnerUp helps you connect with each other, so you both become more successful and achieve your goals. Think of it as internet dating, but for business.

This is not the gig economy. PrtnerUp aims to help business owners and subject matter experts build long-term relationships for mutual benefit.

There’s no rules about what that relationship can look like. Using PrtnerUp you could find a business owner who wants someone to join their team as a staff member. Or someone seeking a co-founder, mentor, or consultant.

They might want a business partner or an investor. The opportunities are limitless.

And with the right Prtner, your job satisfaction might be too.

Top tips for finding a perfect match using PrtnerUp
Think outside your box. PrtnerUp offers a number of parameters for you to find a pool of potential business owner matches. These include industry, expertise needed, type of relationship desired, size of business and location. The narrower the range of options you select in your profile and your search, the harder it will be to find a match.

For example, think of someone who has, say, 15 years of experience managing a factory floor in a food manufacturer. While that means food manufacturers would be really interested in them, that’s not all. Other manufacturing businesses might be interested in the insights this expert could bring. Even service businesses might be interested: those same insights, applied to their own business processes, could dramatically lower their costs.

Thinking outside your industry or specific expertise isn’t the only parameter which you should think broadly about. There’s also the sort of relationship you want – employee is not the only option!

It’s the same with location. Remote work is now a proven way of working, so it makes no difference if the business owner is on the other side of the country (or even the world!).

How to make contact
Create your profile and search for a match, or wait for someone to match with you based on your profile. Then connect. It’s as simple as that. Send a message to your potential Prtner expressing your interest and explain why your skills and experience might be exactly what they’re looking for. Swap details and get in touch.

How to complete an agreement
Here’s where the process really is a little like dating: small steps can be a good way to start if you’re interested in the long term. It’s probably not the best idea to find someone on the site who wants you to work with them, then immediately quit your job and move to the other side of the country. That’s a little too much like a lottery.

Instead, think about how best to establish trust. That could involve anything, it’s completely up to you. Maybe a short contract project you can complete outside of your current job, or by taking a few weeks leave from your current job. Or you could ask to speak to some of their employees. Or their customers. Whatever. This relationship needs to work for you as much as the business owner. Take the time to make sure it’s going to work, or at least that you’ve made it as safe as possible.

Once you make a decision, make sure the business owner clearly communicates the expectations and goals of the relationship and make sure you have a clearly defined (preferably written) role and responsibilities. Seek qualified legal advice if you’re in any doubt at all.

Finally, establish a regular communication schedule and evaluate performance to ensure that you are meeting those expectations and contributing to the success of the business.
